Beer Review -Summoning Lupine – Brujos / Fuana

brujosedit

Summoning Lupine

American Triple IPA

10% – ABV

90 – IBU

Before I get into the beer itself a little backstory.  This was a collaboration between Brujos and Luis Larios, head brewer of Cerveza Fauna in Mexicali, MX.

APPEARANCE: Grabbed this bomber and mumbled a spell I think I learned from Harry Potter to try and brace myself for what I was about to experience. Slowly began pouring into a tulip listening for the sounds of werewolves howls and wizard laughter. Instead I saw a gorgeous unfiltered beer filling up my glass. A murky, fresh pressed orange juice color with hints of sparkling gold, topped by an egg shell white head that billowed up with passion. The head settled down into a nice ring of loose bubbles leaving spotted lace on the glass.

AROMA:  Big blast of over ripe peaches, apricots, passion fruit and mango hit me like a lighting bolt. Right away I can tell this will be a super wet and juicy beer. Slight earthiness and pine aromas are present as if they have been waved gingerly across the glass as not to interfere with the fruit dominate nose. The malt profile is lightly toasted bread with a dab off honey, not over powering just enough to provide an elegant balance.

TASTE: The combination of the look of the unfiltered beer, smell of the fresh juice and that first sip made me sit the glass down. I had to remind myself this is a big beer 10% I feel like I could crush this bomber without even thinking about it. Intense fruit flavors have been created, peaches and apricots that are almost about to turn. They deliver that juicy dense sweetness upfront. The middle palate opens up into an open air bakery set in a garden of flowers, a lot of delicious flavors going on here. Right when I think ive tasted it all the bitterness kicks in to remind me this is a TIPA, just what I am looking for to really round out the whole tasting experience.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium plus body, medium prickly carbonation. Lovely expansive creaminess that coats the whole mouth leaving you longing for another thirst quenching sip.

OVERALL: This one cast a spell over me, an excellent offering from Brujos/Fauna that really nails the unfiltered juicy wet triple IPA style they where going for. I like the collaborative brewing and the awesome art work as well! Really excited to see whats next up if its anywhere near the quality of Summoning Lupine it will be amazing.

RATING: 4.1/5 Zombie Heads!

Beer Zombies year in review, Part 3 Porters

Robust-Porter

Part 3 of my favorite beers of 2015 will be jumping into porters. For this section it will be exclusively non barrel aged. When I post the Stouts list it will also be for the non barrel aged versions. I plan on doing a separate blog post on best of barrel aged Stouts/Porters, I feel like there are just so many delicious beers this is the only way to really break it down. So here we go with my three favorite non ba porters of 2015

Porters

Death By Coconut – Oskar Blues

English Porter, ABV 6.5% IBU 25

This delicious beer has intense fresh cacao flavors swirling with popping coconut aromas, all supported by a semi-sweet porter made from loads of dark chocolate and extra dark caramel malt. I picked up a four pack of cans from a bottle shop in SoCal, they lasted two nights. Its such a perfect after dinner beer, gives you the sweetness of desert without being cloying. It really has a great balance of coconut and dark malts, don’t get me wrong you wont be left wanting more coconut its there in full force!

Maple Bacon Coffee Porter – Funky Buddha Brewing

American Porter, ABV 6.4% IBU 35

Evoking a complete diner-style breakfast in a glass, Maple Bacon Coffee Porter is a complex beer with a multitude of flavors at play. Aromas of sticky maple syrup, coffee, and cream creep forth from the glass. The mouth feel is luxuriously creamy, with layers of sweet malt, toffee, and roast giving way to waves of smoke, coffee, and salted chocolate. It finishes sticky, rich, and sweet, with the flavor of maple syrup lingering pleasantly on the tongue. Kaboom! this is outstanding, Im always weary of anything bacon infused, it has a tendency of coming off artificial to me. Not the case here at all, the saltiness and smoke gives you a sense of bacon without going over board. All in all a super delicious play on a porter.

Everett – Hill Farmstead

American Porter, ABV 7.5%

Everett is crafted from American malted barley, English and German roasted malts, American hops, Hill Farmstead ale yeast, and water from the breweries well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. Decadent in its depth, with a complex backbone of chocolate, coffee, and malty sweetness. Up until I had this magnificent porter I always used the Founders Porter as the base on which to judge every other non flavored porter. This for me is the most perfect example I have tasted myself, there really is nothing that compare or can top it in my opinion.

There it is my top three porters of 2015, I love hearing feedback and suggestions for beers you feel I need to try or left out. Next up, Stouts! check back in a few days for part 4 of Beer Zombies year in review.

Cheers,

BZ

Art by Beer Zombies – Rattlecan, Venitian resort and casino

The now closed space was once a street art inspired restaurant and bar inside the Venetian Casino on the Las Vegas strip. It was co owned by Chef Sammy D and HGTV’s Antonio Ballatore. My work was in the hallways where I did a zombie themed wheat paste collage.

Art by Beer Zombies – Distressed Statue

Once again a unique blank canvas’ was given to me. This time a 500 pound grey statue was dropped off to me with the instructions “make it look like its been left out and vandalized”. I ended up breaking the hands and using a very old recipe i found online using lime salt to white wash it. Then went to town with paint pens and sharpies, the coolest part was we moved the statue into a busy are and left pens for people to add to it. A crane was used to hoist the statue to its resting place about 12 feet off the ground.

Art by Beer Zombies – Hidden walk in door

This was a pretty fun challenge. the owner of the bar wanted to hide the walk in cooler doors from the bar guests so this is what I came up with. I redid the design a few months later to match the theme of the bar a little better.

Art by Beer Zombies – Commonwealth sticker doors

This is a project I started in 2012, it involved covering the glass doors that hide the speakeasy “the laundry room” within Commonwealth. The initial project took approximately 5000+ street art stickers that where sent to me from all over the world. I personally selected and put up all the stickers. I currently curate the door way reapplying and refreshing the ever changing and evolving work of art. The doorway has become a very well known spot in Las Vegas to see sticker art. People come from all over and add their own pieces of work making it a very unique installation project.
