Art by Beer Zombies – Hidden walk in door

This was a pretty fun challenge. the owner of the bar wanted to hide the walk in cooler doors from the bar guests so this is what I came up with. I redid the design a few months later to match the theme of the bar a little better.

Art by Beer Zombies – Commonwealth sticker doors

This is a project I started in 2012, it involved covering the glass doors that hide the speakeasy “the laundry room” within Commonwealth. The initial project took approximately 5000+ street art stickers that where sent to me from all over the world. I personally selected and put up all the stickers. I currently curate the door way reapplying and refreshing the ever changing and evolving work of art. The doorway has become a very well known spot in Las Vegas to see sticker art. People come from all over and add their own pieces of work making it a very unique installation project.

Beer Review – Ninja Vs. Unicorn – Pipeworks Brewing

image (2) image (1)

Ninja Vs. Unicorn – Pipeworks Brewing

American double IPA , DIPA

8.5% ABV

50 IBU

APPEARANCE: I imagine if a ninja’s sword where to chop the head of a Unicorn, he would wipe his blade clean on his ninja pajamas. The color on his ninja costume would be reminiscent of the way this lovely beer poured. A beautiful golden amber, with sparkling highlights that really hypnotize you when you stair into it. Produced a nice big loose white head that lingering cap.

AROMA: Drinking this out in the forest has intensified the pine aromas, all around me the pine cones are falling. Getting tons of sticky pine and huge resinous piney hops coming off the pour. Fresh sliced juicy grapefruit, like the ones on “fruit ninja” game from my iPhone. Followed by some over ripe orange and tangerines. There is a wonderful maltiness that translate into toasted bread and sugar cookies. The nose on this beer is amazing. I imagine this is what a unicorn fart would smell like!

TASTE: After the ninja chopped the head off of this mythical beast, the blood spilled and filled bottle upon bottle of this beer. Usually when a beer has such an outstanding nose the taste doesn’t live up. Not in this case, the flavor layers are all right there in line with the aroma. For a beer that claims 10 ibu it inst a palate wrecker at all,  Its actually very easy drinking. The piney hops come flying at you like a ninja star. Super dank that’s followed up with a big bursting citrus flavor. The sweet malts do make an appearance like a piece of toast with a grapefruit/orange marmalade. There is a some heat on this beer, which is odd with the abv coming in at 8.5%.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body with a moderate carbonation. there is a very pleasant syrupy creaminess that makes this a really smooth drinking ipa. Lots of that resiouness pine comes through on the mouthfeel, really coating the entire mouth. Leaves the mouth with a long lasting lingering finish.

OVERALL: Not sure if Ninja Vs.Unicorn  is a the name it should have. Its so balanced that it should be called Ninja Sex Unicorn. Huge fan of every aspect of this beer, including the little heat that comes out i’m assuming from the battle. Speaking of battles I think the real winner was me! I just saw that they are going to start canning this beer, when that happens I will be trading for a case at a time. Truly everything I would want and ask for out of a dipa.

Beer Review – Mystery Weisse 2014 – Night Shift Brewing

NSMW1

APPEARANCE: Poured a soft, elegant grapefruit color into my glass. Slightly murky and cloudy with an appearance of fresh squeezed juice. A frothy, dish soap bubbled head rose quickly to the top of the glass, and then  dissipated as quick as it produced. What was left of the head settled into a spotted halo that blocked the lazy bubbles of carbonation that where rising from the bottom.

AROMA: Big sour notes consume the bouquet right away, once I get past that it really begins to reveal other layers. Lots of over ripe mango the kind you would pick up from the ground that are slightly funky. Peach skin mixed with a wet grain smell that reminds me of peaches and cream oatmeal from when I was a kid. Overall the sourness just keeps coming back bringing with it a heavy acidic aroma as well.

TASTE: Peachie-o’s! i mean spot on to the sweet sour candied peach gummies that i love. After the intial peach a  very tart fresh squeezed lemonade flavor with slices of mango floating in it comes in. The middle really opens up and becomes quite refreshing, and thirst quenching, right before that sourness smacks me in the teeth again. Ends same as it started peach, mango and lemon sourness.

MOUTHFEEL: Light body and Light carbonation, the lazy bubbles are surprisingly prickly on the tongue. A really great mouth watering long lasting sour finish that invites you to keep drinking.

OVERALL: A really interesting take on a Berliner Weisse, I think the fruit really adds to the overall drinking experience. It makes complete sense to do a fruited Berliner since its served to tourists/locals in Berlin with a fruited syrup to help calm some of the sourness down. I read so many different reviews that rated this beer from complete drain pour to outstanding. I’m guessing there is a huge bottle variation issue with it. Luckily for me my bottle was really great, i put it closer to the outstanding mark.

Review – B Cups Plastic IPA Cups

mt8x8

Today I braved the Las Vegas wind and took a short drive to Red Rock Canyon. Wanted to break in my new Fermented Reality plastic ipa cup on a hike. I will say I was very impressed, with its light weight and great design. It really did feel like I was drinking out of proper glassware, it added the extra aroma and agitation I am used to with my ipa glasses. Only difference instead of at a bar or my house I was 5 miles back country enjoying the same experience. This will be with me on every hike and camping adventure from here on out!

We love our Dogfish Head / Spiegelau IPA glassware and drinking beer from a proper glass is important to us. So in situations where glass just wouldn’t do, we were sick about having to drink beer from a red party cup. Rather than complain about it, we decided to do something about it!

B Cups plastic IPA cups are ONLY available from Fermented Reality! B Cups IPA cups are made from a rigid, shatterproof, fully transparent, BPA-free plastic. Your B Cups will last for dozens of uses when rinsed well with only water. Even left out overnight, these cups come clean with a little dish soap and warm water and leave no residual stale beer smell.

2015 Firestone Walker “From the Barrel” Recap

DSCN0324

The fifth annual From the Barrel took place over this past weekend at the beautiful Santa Margarita Ranch. This sold out event was the most unique beer event I have had the pleasure of attending. Couldn’t have asked for better weather or a more picture perfect venue to hold this 1920’s inspired night. All of the unique spirits, ports, and beers were barrel aged to truly make a most memorable night.

DSCN0336

FEATURED BREWERIES:

Almanac Beer Co. Ballast Point Brewing, BarrelHouse Brewing Co., Black Market Brewing Co., Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co., Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Hermitage Brewing Co., The Libertine Pub & Brewing, The Lost Abbey, Mother Earth Brew Co., Ninkasi Brewing Co., Pizza Port Brewing Co., Russian River Brewing Co., Societe Brewing Co., Telegraph Brewing Co.

Also in attendance were some amazing distilleries, wineries, and restaurants, being a Beer Zombie I’ll focus on the beers!

The beers on hand seemed to be equally divided into barrel aged stouts and sours.

Overall favorite sour being poured was from:

Hermitage Brewing Company – Strawberry Sour

http://hermitagebrewing.com

1627 S. 7th Street, San Jose, CA 95112

Talking with brand manager Nicole Marquez I came to find out this sour was brewed especially for the event. Even poured out of a labeless bottle, this sour was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend searching this out and trying it if you get a chance.

Overall favorite stout being poured was from:

Firestone Walker Brewing Company – 2015 Parabola

http://www.firestonebeer.com

1400 Ramada Dr. Paso Robles, CA 93446

Even though I have had this multiple times, it was the first time having it on draft. It’s an almost perfect example of a ba stout. Plenty of rich, chewy roasted malts, charred oak and bourbon-like vanilla fill the palate and create a seamless finish. If you haven’t had this do yourself a favor and make it happen.

DSCN0321

From The Barrel went on until 10pm with plenty of libations flowing and dancing. Music provided by Ventucky String Band http://ventuckystringband.com , overall a very unique way to taste some amazing barrel aged beverages, food and indulge in 1920’s inspired music and fashion. I suggest buying tickets early next year and joining in on the fun, I know I’m already counting down the days until the sixth annual!
